Plagiarism as an Ethical Behavior

Question: Discuss about the Plagiarism as an Ethical Behavior. Answer: Introduction: It is very unethical to take credit for the work of someone else or rather to pass the work as your own without appropriately crediting them. The act can be described as plagiarism, and it is an offense as it will be like stealing the work or ideas of other people. Whenever you use someones work, it is entirely appropriate to cite them in the text and at the end of the book (Lang, 2016). This is important as ideas are believed to be the currency for academia as any time writers initiate ideas, they always like credit for the efforts they had put towards the work. While citing the ideas borrowed from other peoples works, the writer honors the individuals involved in initiating these ideas. Failure to mention these borrowed ideas or the work is seen as a disrespectful act to the original owners of the works. Crediting a source of information is crucial so that the origin of the ideas you use can be traced. In this study, the discussion will be pointing out how unethical plagiarism is m ost especially in the academic context. In the society, stealing is known to be an unacceptable act, and it is the message passed to the children that taking someones item without their consent is wrong and it is affecting the third party and also possibly affecting the entire community. The use of other people's work is termed unethical and has no difference to theft. Most people try to make the act of stealing other people work as victimless acts and as such, they assume that it does not harm anyone. Individuals with high moral values have a higher moral sensitivity in defining the unethical acts as plagiarism. They thus refrain from the wrongful acts as they respect the original composers of the work or ideas and they uphold their efforts in the field (Alexander Go?mez-Arostegui, 2016). Students are at times failing to realize that they are committing the immoral act as well as failing to honor the academic integrity. By respecting the knowledge, and its development, alongside being honest in the evaluation processes are the integrate part of the academic integrity. If the acts of plagiarism by the students are left unattended to, or unchecked, it diminishes the value of the degree as the core values of respecting knowledge may be breached according to academic policies or plagiarism. It is the reason institutions have come up with various plagiarism checkers to ensure that their students are not offending any people by stealing their ideas and at most, they aim at retaining the academic integrity of their institutions (Brondmo, 2015). If a student majoring in accounting degree makes his way through attaining a degree by cheating and using plagiarized work, it will not be fair to the future clients who will be relying on their expertise in managing their financial issues. The copying of the work by other people, and using them to get marks on the course can lead to very disastrous situations. These students will be given work in their employment and will not know how to go about it simply because they never took their time to do research and they dont have ideas on the same. In academic institutions, it is very unfair for the hardworking students to receive the same marks as the cheating students in the same assignments. It also applies for stealing other people's content through the Internet as it is seen as a brutal act of a person who toiled to pursue their creativity. Copy pasting of the literary works by other people comes as a violation to the hard work the owner of the work had done. The person borrowing is bound to enjoy the benefits of the work that the original owner never enjoyed. The act of copying the idea or the work is deemed to be beneficial for a short term (Turnitin, 2011). In such cases, a student may benefit by passing the test making short-term profits. They it will be a kind of restriction on the side of the student as they will be barring them from making the use of their creative abilities and them also curb the chances of being creative and innovative. The short-term gains may at this point be too small as compared to the huge restrictions that befall the student by stealing other peoples works (Hunter, 2015). The original owner of a concept or idea of a particular work is the only legit person entitled to be using the work with all the freedom the wish to have. In any case, the idea or the work has been developed; only the owner enjoys the rights to using the work again and again or reproducing it in the manner they so wish (S?trba, 2012). Other people aiming to use other peoples works will be required to have the consent of the original owners. In the learning environment, the act of plagiarism causes degeneration and also limits the learning process of a student. In the context of working conditions, the act of plagiarism is termed as a dishonest on the part of the employee and is also a reflection of their behavior (Cantatore, 2014). Data sensitive departments in the working sector must not have an employee prone to plagiarizing as it could easily result in a misdiagnosis as well as a misappropriation because the information that has been used has been skewed. The person applying plagiarized data may be the team that used to do plagiarized assignments while they were in school. This can be one of the side effects of the issue as these personal do not have the desired knowledge or idea to generate their data. Through the use of technological innovations, most people are lured into the art of copying and pasting information from one work to another document as they will be using shortcuts to achieve certain tasks. Their driving force might, however, be the pressure from the supervisors in the workplace and also the pressure posed by the competitors that may influence the employee to apply copy-pasting skills (Atkinson, 2007). To conclude, it has been found that whenever you use someones work, it is quite appropriate to cite them in the text and at the end of the text. Failure to mention these borrowed ideas or the work is seen as a disrespectful act to the original owners of the views. The use of other people's work is termed unethical and has no difference to theft. Most people try to make the act of stealing other people work as victimless acts and as such, they assume that it does not harm anyone. If the acts of plagiarism by the students are left unattended to, or unchecked, it diminishes the value of the degree as the core values of respecting knowledge may be breached according to academic policies or plagiarism (Strowel, 2009). The copying of the work by other people, and using them to get marks on the course can lead to very unfortunate situations. In academic institutions, it is very unfair for the hardworking students to receive the same scores as the cheating students in the same assignments.
